How to Set SMS Reminder Using Google Calendar

Most of us know about Google calendar. Google calendar is an online service that lets you set reminders and keep track of important events. However, since the service is online, you will need to be online at the time of the reminder to actually get it. But that’s not always possible.

For android users, calendar events are synced automatically. There are methods for syncing with other phones too. But let us consider that for one of the many possible reasons, you are unable to sync Google Calendar events with your phone. Then what?

To address this issue, Google Calendar lets you set SMS reminders for events.

Using Google Calendar

To start using Google calendar, visit http://calendar.google.com and sign in with your Google ID and password. No registration required, obviously, if you already have a Google account (which almost everybody does).

Adding Your Phone Number

Before you can set SMS reminders, you will need to add your phone number to your account. To do this, click on the gear icon on the top right of the calendar and then select Settings. Now go to the mobile setup tab.

Here select your country, add your phone number and click on Send Verification Code. You will receive a 6 digit verification code on your phone. Enter the code in the space provided. Now click on Finish setup. You are now ready to set SMS reminders.Google Calendar mobile setup

Note: If you do not receive the verification code, make sure your provider is supported. Click on What carriers are supported to see a list of supported carriers.

Adding an Event

To set a reminder, you will first need to add an event to the calendar. Click on the desired date or time. An add event dialog will pop out.

 Google calendar add Event popup

If you only want to add an event, it can be done from this popup itself. However, if you want to set an SMS Reminder, you will need to click on Edit
event.

Setting an SMS Reminder

On the edit event page, add the name, date, time and location of the event. Below these there is the reminders section.

Here set the type of reminder as SMS. Select how many minutes or hours before the actual event time you want to be reminded of it. When you are done, click on the Save button at the top.

Now you will receive an SMS notification at the set time reminding you of the event.
